ABOUT THE AUXILIARYThe American Legion Auxiliary was established in 1920. Today, the Auxiliary is the most influential patriotic women's organization in the world, but their success has not changed their purpose. They join with The American Legion to serve God and this Country as a family and it's a bond will never be broken. Membership in the Auxiliary
is now open to Legionnaires' wives, mothers, daughters, sisters,
granddaughters and grandmothers. With close a million members nation wide,
the Auxiliary gives tens of thousands of hours to its communities and to
veterans, and manages hundreds of volunteer programs. It raises money to
support its own programs plus charities familiar to most of us. All of this
is accomplished though the unselfishness of volunteers.
HISTORYWhen Manette Peninsula Unit
68 received its Charter on February 19, 1936 it only had 10 members. Through
the years its membership has increased and decreased in size, but through it
all it has remained strong in its service to Veterans and the community it
so cares for.
PREAMBLE OF THE AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY CONSTITUTIONFor God and Country, we associate ourselves together for the following purposes: To uphold and defend the
constitution of the United States of America; to Maintain law and order; to
foster and perpetuate a one hundred per cent Americanism; to preserve the
memories and incidents of our associations during the Great Wars; to
inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state and
nation; to combat the autocracy of both the classes and the masses; to make
right the master of might; to promote peace and goodwill on earth; to
safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom, and
democracy; to participate in and contribute to the accomplishment of the
aims and purposes of The American Legion; to consecrate and sanctify our
association by our devotion to mutual helpfulness.
YOUTH PROGRAMSJunior MembersThe Auxiliary has no age limits, through the Junior Members program, it prepares the Auxiliary's young members to carry on with the work of the organization. In this way it assures the organization's growth and continuity by teaching the fundamentals of leadership and service to future members at the Unit, District, Department and National levels. Girls StateEach year Unit 68 Auxiliary
chooses six High School Junior girls to go to state. This event is held in
Ellensburg, Washington. For one week these young women are given the
opportunity to experience the workings of State and Federal government. Also
at these sessions, these young women learn about leadership, patriotism,
self-worth and confidence, which helps prepare them to take their places as
productive and successful members of our society. |
